The ‘On the Bus’ Business Strategy!

If you have a team to manage and are finding that you are not getting the most from them, then possibly developing an ‘On the Bus’ strategy is worth considering.

The traditional ‘On the Bus’ strategy is about getting all your team members pulling together to achieve a common set of business goals. In the analogy you are the bus driver setting the direction the bus (your business) will travel and your team are the passengers that are happy to go where the bus is heading (towards your business goals).

But imagine for a moment that not all passengers are equally motivated about being on your bus. The result is a business that is underperforming its potential. And in many cases is forcing the key players to head off in their own direction leaving the business stagnating and reliant on an exhausted leader.

Many leaders when setting strategic direction firstly decide where to drive the bus before they consider who should be on the bus. However, it is probably more crucial to get the right people on the bus before you decide on any direction.

The benefits of getting the right people on the bus first include:

  • The right people are responsive to any changes in direction enforced along the way by internal and external pressures.
  • The right people are able to achieve results that the wrong people will never be able to achieve.
  • The right people do not need motivating as they are self-motivated toward achieving great results.

What this means is that if you want to achieve fantastic results you need to firstly identify your quality team members, those that always give their best performance. Then ensure you get those that aren’t ready to pull their weight off the bus as soon as possible.

Once you are happy that your entire team is going to give you 100% then set your direction. Great leaders will look to engage their team in deciding where the bus should go. Having a team that is motivated by achieving great results and that have some ‘buy-in’ to setting the businesses strategic direction will help greatly in accelerating your bus as it heads for its destination.
