How can I find the time to work on my business when I am already working at 100 percent?

This is a very common objection amongst small business owners, many are constantly working 12 to 14 hour days.

My advice is to find at least half an hour where you can lock yourself away from distractions e.g. phone, email, staff, family etc and review your priorities. This may mean only watching half a footie game on the weekend or missing your favourite TV show but the sacrifice will be worth it!

Before you start it pays to write down what your goal is. Make certain it is clear and achievable. “I want to work no more than 9 hours a day so I can spend some time each evening with my family”, might be an example. The next step is planning how you will achieve it!

List all the repetitive jobs you do (be it daily, monthly, yearly it doesn’t matter). Pick out the important and urgent tasks and ensure these get addressed first then work your way through the urgent but not important, then not urgent but important and then get rid of the non urgent and unimportant tasks. What you are trying to do is delegated, outsource or eliminated as many of these tasks as possible to achieve your goal. What ideally you should be left with is just the tasks only you can perform.

Hints:

  • Know what your strengths and passions are and delegate the tasks that don’t fall into these areas.
  • Look to introduce new systems, technology and process to create efficiency gains.
  • Get assistance before you burn out – the consequences of not can be severe.
  • If after this process you are left with a couple of free hours a day/week don’t stress, just think of all the great working ‘on’ your business projects you can undertake or extra time you can spend doing what you enjoy most!
