When looking to employ the right person begin with a clear idea of the new recruit’s responsibilities and expected duties.   This can be done by having a detailed job description. The job description will provide some insight into the type of skills, experience and attitude you want in a new recruit.

To increase the likelihood of finding the best person for the job be a little innovative in your advertising.

  • Ask your staff for recommendations as they know what is required.
  • Speak with education providers about top students.
  • Use social media networks such as Facebook.
  • Advertise on your website.

During the interview process answer these key questions:

  • Can the candidate do the Job (his or her skills, abilities, experience)?
  • Will the candidate do the Job (his or her motivation, aspirations, desires)?
  • Will the candidate fit into the team and the company (his or her values, culture and ethics)?

Ensure you structure the interview the same way for each candidate and ask the same questions so there is an even playing field for analysing candidate responses.

During the recruiting process you need to sell the benefits of working for your business.  Hence it is important to create the impression that your organisation is efficient, successful and a place people want to work. Many employers do this by promoting themselves as an ‘Employer of Choice’ a business that offers more favourable conditions than other employers.

Past behaviour and performance are strong guides to future behaviour and performance so ensure you check at least two relevant references. Stick to business references as personal references tend to be of little value in determining how a person will operate in the workplace.

Key attributes to look out for are integrity, intelligence and energy. If you are struggling to find candidates that fit the bill then don’t be afraid to re-advertise as hiring the wrong person will cost you more in the long run than having to wait another few weeks to fill the role with the right person!
