Traits of an Effective Team

Many studies over the years have identified a number of characteristics or habits that are inherent in super performing teams that are not present in others. To help improve the effectiveness of your team let’s look at some of the key habits.

  • Effective leaders – Leaders know their team members and how to give them direction and get compliance by motivating each individual in his or her most effective way.
  • Share an explicit goal – Each team member may have his or her own personal goals, but all the team members understand the common goal, because they all helped to define it.
  • Communication – Effective teams foster discussion, exchange rich ideas, vital information and have lively debates. All team members feel that their opinion is valued and that they will not be ridiculed for voicing an opinion.
  • Always learning – Never assume that their way of working is the only effective way. They are constantly learning new techniques and from their own mistakes.
  • Defined roles – Each member has a niche that provides stability to the team and helps the team member feel needed and appreciated. Roles within the team are carefully chosen based on the skills of the members.
  • Aren’t afraid of conflict – know that they are all responsible for the quality of the team’s work, so they are not afraid to challenge each other to ensure a better process.
  • Celebrate Success – Get in the habit of celebrating small forward steps as well as major achievements.
  • Complementing each other – Each team member will have certain strengths and weaknesses, by understanding and adapting to each other’s nature and personality the team can handle more complex issues.
  • Negative behaviour is eliminated – Destructive behavior and communication is not tolerated by the group. Abuse, exclusion, bullying, harmful gossip is dealt with quickly and decisively.
