New Energy Efficiency Standards for Victorian Rentals

The Victorian Government recently wrapped up public consultations on proposed energy efficiency standards aimed at improving the comfort and living costs for renters while reducing the state’s carbon footprint. From October 2025, landlords in Victoria could be required to implement a range of energy-saving measures, including: ceiling insulation, improved door sealing, replacement of old hot water
 
 

More super for mums, dads as parental leave laws pass

New mums and dads will get extra superannuation on their government-funded paid parental leave after reforms cleared federal parliament. Eligible parents with children born or adopted after July 1 will get 12 per cent super for up to six months of parental leave. About 180,000 Australian families are expected to benefit from the new laws, which passed the Senate on Thursday.
 
 

Jury Duty: Employers ‘must respect the judicial process’ 

In the matter of R v The Gilded Wombat Pty Ltd, which came before Magistrate Scott Nash at Sydney’s Downing Centre last week, an employer was found guilty of threatening an employee who took recommended time off while serving jury duty on a murder trial. In a statement, the NSW Department of Communities and Justice said the decision is believed to be the first case brought over an employer threatening a juror.
 
 

Government releases details on luxury car tax changes

The government has released draft legislation to update the luxury car tax (LCT) after previously announcing it would tighten the definition of a fuel-efficient vehicle and align the indexation rate for LCT thresholds. The changes will be in effect from 1 July 2025, the government said.

ATO urges workers to claim $17.8bn in lost super

Tax Office data shows the pool of lost and unclaimed funds has grown by $4 billion since 2021.
The ATO is calling on workers to check if they are missing superannuation savings after the latest data showed it was holding $17.8 billion in lost and unclaimed funds.
The billions in lost and unclaimed super is spread across 7.1 million accounts and has grown by around $2 billion since last year and $4 billion since 2021.
